Prevention

Most people seek out chiropractic care when they are in pain.  They have a headache, neck or back pain, or their child has ear infections or colic or some other symptom.  But chiropractic is so much more than getting rid of symptoms!  A better reason to see a chiropractor is to prevent the issue from happening in the first place.

We sit down with our new clients and chat with them about why they are here and what they are looking for, and a very common phrase that we hear is “I don’t want a spine like my Dad’s”, or “My grandparents were miserable at the end of their lives, and I don’t want to live like that!”  They have heard all of the complaining, seen how much it has limited their loved ones and THEY DON’T WANT THAT FUTURE!!!  From a doctor’s perspective, this is a very valid reason for care.

We have seen it over and over, spinal issues run in the family.  We even had a 4 generation family that came in, first the baby, and then the mom, grandma, and great grandma all eventually came in for care.  The interesting thing is that they all had “weaknesses” in their spine at the same general areas.

I had another lady that came in and after a few weeks of care, said: “Doc, I was able to get out of bed and stand up this morning!”  I was like ok, and she was like “No, you don’t understand!  I was able to get out of bed and immediately stand up!”  From my eyes she could tell that I wasn’t getting it, so she continued: “It takes every member of my family 45 minutes to be able to go from lying down to standing upright, and I was able to do it as soon as I got out of bed today!”

It really makes me wonder, what kind of things are all of us putting up with, simply because “that it the way it has always been with our family” or “yeah, but that’s normal.”  We LOVE seeing how people improve under chiropractic care, especially when they get improvements they don’t expect.

While I am up on my soapbox, one of the biggest frustrations that we have as doctors, is pulling up x-rays, and seeing arthritis on someone’s images when they are in their 40s or earlier.  In going through their history we can usually see when this started, whether it was from a fall down the stairs, a “minor” car accident, or a sports injury.  It takes about 20 years for the most common type of arthritis of the spine, osteoarthritis, to develop to the point where it causes pain.  I would love to see people going to the chiropractor on a regular basis to prevent this from happening!

But prevention seems hard for many people, we all have many other pulls on our limited time and finances, and if we aren’t in pain, not a lot of people are willing to put in the work to have a better future.  I will say that we have a lot of people in our office that are putting in the time, putting in the effort, and they are living a great life.  Are you?

Every healer loves the miraculous cures, the single instances that change someone’s life from that second on, but I firmly believe that the greatest miracles are all of the things that NEVER HAPPEN since we prevent them through regular chiropractic care!
