Chiropractic and Children

"As a Twig is Bent, So is the Tree Inclined" - Proverbs

Until the end of August, any child (newborn to 18) can get checked to see if chiropractic can help them, at our expense.  Say that Dr. Dan sent you.

Why do we put so much emphasis on providing chiropractic care to children? Because children have the most to gain from chiropractic care.  If we can start taking care of your child's spine while it is still developing, before it has fully hardened into its adult state, we can work to give your child or children their absolute best chance to have a fully functioning nerve system over the course of their lifetime.  This fully functioning nerve system is responsible for their breathing, the functioning of all of their organs and systems, their hand-eye coordination, their moods, the balance of their internal chemistry, and the function of their immune system - to name just a small portion of what your nerve system does.

Let's take a look at our "normal" medical birth process.  The mother is in a strange place surrounded by masked individuals.  She is placed in a position that is uncomfortable for her, but better for the doctors.  because of the way she is lying down, pressure is being put on the sacrum, the bone in between her hip bones.  This pressure actually makes the birth canal smaller, making it harder for the baby to come out.  Most mothers are not under chiropractic care, so there is a greater chance of the hip bones to be misaligned as well, again narrowing the birth canal.  This whole process is usually more stressful than natural, leading to dystocia, or extended labor.  In nature, if a mammal is going to give birth, it finds a secluded place where it is comfortable.  If anything startles the mother, or if anything the least bit threatening comes near, the labor stops.  Let's go back to the hospital setting with masked men, an uncomfortable mom, and people coming in and out all of the time.  With this backdrop, it is of no surprise that we need so much intervention in the form of vacuum extractions and forceps.  To make matters worse, most deliveries end with the doctor twisting and pulling the head in order to rotate the child's shoulders.  Most of the time, this is a natural occurrence, as long as one is willing to wait for it to happen on its own.  Unfortunately, our society is not very patient.  The doctor and the hospital usually has a schedule that they want the birth to follow.  There can be many factors that lead to a traumatic birth, the cord can be wrapped around the baby's neck, or the doctor can be too aggressive and pull with excessive force during delivery.  We have all heard of a baby's collarbone snapping during delivery.  This is usually because of the force that was put upon the infant's neck.  This same force is responsible for misaligning the atlas, the very top bone of the neck.  When the atlas is misaligned, it can put pressure directly on the brainstem, leading to an increase in SIDS, and a diminishment of the child's overall health.  That is why we are so passionate about having every single newborn checked after birth; we want to make sure that every single bone is in the right position, allowing that child its best chance at a full life.

What conditions do we treat?  This is a common question.  We do not "treat" any conditions.  Diagnosing and treating conditions is the role of Medicine, and we are not medical doctors.  We are doctors of chiropractic.  Our job is to find and remove vertebral subluxations.  When we remove these interferences to the communication system of your body, your entire body works better!  For some children, the removal of this interference allows their body to clear up colic, ear infections, headaches, and other conditions on its own.  The power that knew how to put their entire body together from two little half cells is still in their body, doing the best that it can.  We remove an interference and allow that healing power to function the way that it is supposed to work.  Because of this approach, children love to visit their chiropractor!  No shots, no medication, no painful procedures.  While we do not treat any conditions, children under chiropractic care typically see symptoms disappear as they become healthier.after home birth.jpg

I'm afraid that you might hurt my child
We are very respectful of this statement because it is a testament of how much you love and want to protect your child.  We usually hear this because the parents are expecting us to use the same amount of force on an infant as on an adult.  We take care of every person according to what they need, and put in as little force as possible in every circumstance.  For an infant, the pressure needed to move a neck bone back into place is the same amount of pressure that you would use if you were testing the ripeness of a tomato.

"Show me the Money" - Some parents say that this is all well and good, but where is the research that a) misaligned bones putting pressure on nerves is a bad thing, and b) chiropractic care can help.  Let's take a look at some studies that address these issues.  A medical researcher, Dr. Gutmann found that 92% of children have the very top bone of their spine, the atlas, misaligned.  This puts pressure on the brainstem, the part of the brain that is responsible for breathing, the regulation of your heart, and most of your basic drives and functions.  Gutmann G. 1987. Blocked atlantal nerve syndrome in infants and small children. Reprinted by ICA International Review of Chiropractic, 37-43, July/ August, 1990.

Another study was done by Drs. van Breda, who compared the children of two hundred chiropractors versus the children of two hundred pediatricians.  Obviously, each parent will give their child the absolute best health care that they know, so this researcher looked at the health of medical kids versus chiropractic kids.  These were the findings: The chiropractic children showed a 69% otitis media (ear infection) free response, while the 'medical' children only had a 20% otitis media free response.  Pediatricians were more likely to feel that every child would have been on a course of antibiotics at least once, and some suggested that almost 100% of children suffer from otitis media, whereas many chiropractors reported that their children had never been on antibiotics...  The results of the study confirm the benefits of the chiropractic model of health care on the health status of children.  van Breda W.M. and van Breda J.M.. 1989. A comparative study of the health status of children raised under the health care models of chiropractic and allopathic medicine. Journal of Chiropractic Research, 101-103, Summer.

Another medical doctor, Dr. Henry Winsor had a big question - "How do chiropractors get people better without drugs or surgery?"  He planned out and carried out an interesting experiment.  He performed autopsies on seventy-five human and twenty-two cat cadavers to see if there was any relationship between diseased organs and spinal misalignments.  He carried these experiments out at the University of Pennsylvania.  He found a total of 221 diseased organs.  Dr. Windor wrote that "(Of the 221 diseased organs) 212 were observed to belong to the same sympathetic (nerve) segments as the vertebrae in curvature...  These figures cannot be expected to exactly coincide... for an organ may receive sympathetic filaments from several spinal segments"   Let us look at that again - there was a 96% correlation between the aberration of the spinal bones and the diseases of the internal organs.  Whisor H. Sympathetic segmental disturbances - II. The evidence of the association, in dissected cadavers, of visceral disease with vertebrae deformities of the same sympathetic segments Medical Times. As you can see, the idea of children and chiropractic gets us pretty fired up!  We look at every point in a child's life as a pivot point.  From this point on they will either be getting better and healthier, or worse and sicker.  Under chiropractic care we know that a child's entire life will be improved, and we want your children to be outrageously healthy!
